Where memories are recalled

George ‘Gus’ Watson

GeorgeMy grandfather, George ‘Gus’ Watson, is the gentleman wearing the cap sitting outside the Bull Inn, Larkfield. He died in May 1955 aged 82 and from his appearance, I suspect this picture was taken not long before that. Certainly in the 1950s.

He and my grandmother, Alice (d1959) lived in Lunsford Lane at the time. They had nine children, most of whom lived in the area until they too passed away, the last of them in 2011.

My mother’s birth certificate (b1917) states that George was employed as a carman, which I believe was a horse and wagon driver, possibly working for the railway. Later he worked as a farm labourer in the Plaxtol area. He probably moved to Larkfield when he retired but I am not sure when that was.
